All total, Dr. Melvin Morse has published four books on death-related matters, and is arguably the world’s foremost scientific authority on the phenomena surrounding death and its greater spiritual dimension. Morse's first book was Closer To The Light, published in 1990. It was the first truly scientific work ever published on NDEs. At the time of its publication, Morse was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington.
Paperback — Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation (1980)
Professor Ian Stevenson has spent over 40 years devoted to the study of children who have spoken about putative past lives. In each case, Stevenson methodically documents the child's statements. Then he attempts to identify the deceased person the child identifies with, and where possible verifies the facts of the deceased person's life that match the child's memory. The most detailed collections of reports in favor of reincarnation have been published by Stevenson. In 1977, the "Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases" devoted most of one issue to Stevenson's work and the journal's editor described Stevenson as "a methodical, careful, even cautious investigator."

Review: Dr. Stevenson takes the classical scientific approach to the study of reincarnation. He is his own hardest critic, and in his scientific rigor, dismisses any case which has any reasonable explanation other than reincarnation. He then takes this distilled list of cases and objectively analyzes them. His work has mostly to do with children who remember their past lives, because their memories are spontaneous (not artificially induced) and least likely to be tainted by any outside influences. He has also pioneered the study of birthmarks as they relate to past-life physical traumas.

While Dr. Stevenson cautiously adopts the phrase, "suggestive of reincarnation", in my humble opinion, I have less proof that my backside is currently pressed against the seat of my chair (not being able to see either directly), than he has of reincarnation. Don't take anyone else's word for it, read the original studies yourself, because most of the skeptical criticisms consist of ill-informed sophistry.

Paperback — The Yoga Sutras (1990)

Despite that, Yoga is not a religion. It is a method of achieving God Realization. This new printing is a timeless treasure. It will surely be read again and again by any seeker treading the spiritual path.

Review: The Yoga Sutras are perhaps the oldest form of modern advice that exists today. Despite their antiquity, they give practical direction for dealing with situations in modern life. The Sutras, or "thought-threads," are at least 4,000 years old. They include the yogic teachings on ethics, physical postures, concentration and meditation. They are presented here in their purest form, along with the original Sanskrit and its translation and in-depth commentaries by Swami Satchidananda, one of the world's most revered Yoga Masters. In this classic context, Swamiji offers practical advice based on his own experience mastering the mind and achieving physical, mental and emotional harmony.
Hardcover — The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna (1942)

The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna was originally published in five volumes, and wascondensed into a single volume in 1942. It chronicles the life and teachings of a very special spiritual teacher who many believe was an Avatar (direct incarnation of God). He was called "The Mad Monk of Dakshineswar" because he frequently slipped into trances and merged his consciousness with God (entered Samadhi). The book contains a rare photo of him in this state of divine unity.

Biography: Sri Ramakrishna was born in 1836 in a small town in India and entered Mahasamadhi (died) in August of 1886. During his life, he became "God Realized" alternately as a Hindu, a Moslem and a Christian. He concluded that: "All religions are true. Just as many rivers flow into the sea, God can be reached by different religions. They all are one." In truth, he was the ad hoc founder of the multi-faith movement.

Review: The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna offers readers a penetrating view into the spiritual wisdom of India. On account of his deep mystical experiences and constant absorption in God, Sri Ramakrishna is regarded as being of the stature of Krishna, Buddha, and Christ. The Gospel is the record of Sri Ramakrishna's conversations, which are unique in their breadth and depth. Profound spiritual truths are described with simple words and vivid stories, revealing the divinity of man and the spiritual foundation of the universe. This volume is a goldmine of inspiration, wisdom, theology, and metaphysics.

Review: "Bardo Thodol, or The Tibetan Book of the Dead, is one of the indisputable masterpieces of spiritual literature. Before this Penguin Classics edition, this ancient Buddhist funerary text has known to American readers only through partial translations, some of which had been distorted by the beliefs of Western interpreters. The Tibetan Book of the Dead: First Complete Translation provides a clear, reliable rendering of this profound assessment of states of consciousness. To this fine edition, His Holiness The Dalai Lama provides a helpful introductory commentary."
Paperback — Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism (1974)
A modern spiritual classic, The Tibetan meditation master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche highlights the commonest pitfall to which every aspirant on the spiritual path falls prey: what he calls spiritual materialism. The universal tendency, he shows, is to see spirituality as a process of self-improvement—the impulse to develop and refine the ego when the ego is, by nature, essentially empty. "The problem is that ego can convert anything to its own use," he said, "even spirituality." It is a message that has resonated with students for nearly thirty years, and remains fresh as ever today.

Biography: Master of meditation, social visionary, author, artist, poet—Chögyam Trungpa (1939–1987) founded Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, the first Buddhist university in North America; the Shambhala Training program; and Vajradhatu, an international association of meditation centers (now known under the name Shambhala International).

Review: Trungpa Rinpoche's incisive, compassionate teachings serve to wake us up from the tricks we all play on ourselves. It offers us a far brighter reality—the true and joyous liberation that inevitably involves letting go of the self rather than working to improve it. Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism examines the self-deceptions, distortions, and sidetracks that imperil the spiritual journey.

Paperback — The Function of Orgasm (1973)
The Function of Organism, Vol. 1 - Discovery of the Orgone. This book describes Reich's medical and scientific work on the living organism from his first efforts at the Medical School of the University of Vienna in 1919 to the laboratory experiments in Oslo in 1939 which revealed the existence of a radiating biological energy, orgone energy. The subject of "sexuality" is basic to this work, and Reich shows clearly its importance for human life and its relevance in understanding the social problems of our time. It is also important to the science of Yoga since it establishes a scientific foundation for the phenomena of Kundalini.

Biography: Wilhelm Reich, a native of Austria, was born in 1897. His many other works include Listen, Little Man!, Character Analysis, and The Mass Psychology of Fascism. In 1947, following a series of critical articles about the orgone and his political views appeared in The New Republic and Harper's,] the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began an investigation into his claims, winning an injunction against the interstate sale of orgone accumulators. Charged with contempt of court for violating the injunction, Reich conducted his own defense, which involved sending the judge all his books to read, and arguing that a court was no place to decide matters of science. He was sentenced to two years in prison, and in August 1956, several tons of his publications were burned by the FDA. He died of heart failure in jail just over a year later, days before he was due to apply for parole. Many believe that the charges against him were politically oriented and were instigated due to the government's fear that the public realize how the government was manipulating people's minds.

After the closing of the Old Testament and during the first centuries of the Common Era, inspired authors,--Jews, Christians, Gnostics, and Pagans--continued to write sacred scriptures. Many of these texts were of amazing beauty and religious importance and competed with books within the [established] canon... Had events been otherwise, and certain of these texts incorporated in our Bible, our understanding of the tradition of religious thought would have been radically altered. Today, free of doctrinal strictures, we can read the 'greater bible' of the Judeo-Christian world.
